Stars, Diamond Rings & California Wives rock the Cradle

To contact us Click HERE
All photos by Kevin Norris
Canadian indie pop band Stars returned to the Cat's Cradle on Wednesday night to share their latest album The North with their Triangle fans.

The band played a set heavy on the new album, opening with danceable first single "The Theory of Relativity" and they played all but one of the twelve songs during their 20-song set. The crowd belted out the lyrics to the new songs including "Through the Mines" and the fantastic "Hold on When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It."

The band balanced the new songs with tunes from their catalog, digging as far back as "Elevator Love Letter" from their 2003 album Heart. "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" featured a vigorous crowd singalong that caused big smiles to wash over most of the band.

Torquil Campbell was particularly fiery during the set bouncing around the stage, talking to the crowd and repeatedly praising the Cat's Cradle and the crowd for supporting the band for many years.

When the band returned for an encore, it started with singing "Happy Birthday" to keyboardist Chris Seilgman, who had just turned 40. They then played a single-song encore of "The 400," a ballad from The North. It was a fantastic show and the band sounded tighter than ever. From their repeated praise for Carrboro, I expect we'll be seeing them again at the Cradle before we know it.

The night started with two great opening sets. First was Chicago band California Wives.  The band played a short, but fantastic set of dreamy pop tunes from their debut album Art History. Even though frontman Jayson Kramer was battling the flu, he and the rest of the band sounded fantastic and killed with their set closer "Blood Red Youth."

Canadian singer songwriter John O, aka Diamond Rings, was us up next. Backed by a three-piece band decked out in all black, John O strode onto stage wearing all white including a studded white leather jacket. The band rolled through a short set of funky, electro-pop laced with 1980s charm. The band played songs mostly from their forthcoming album Free Dimensional, due out on October 23, but also played the band's first song "All Yr Songs" as a request. Diamond Rings are definitely a band to check out when they start touring behind their new album.

Indie bands rockin' the Haunted Mill Wednesday

To contact us Click HERE
The Haunted Mill in Belmont has long been a Halloween tradition in the area, but before the season officially kicks off this weekend (with buy one get one free tickets) the Mill hosts the most recent in a series of live music concerts called PotLuck XIII. This week's acts include Roanoke-based indie dream pop outfit Eternal Summers, Philly noise-pop combo Bleeding Rainbow (formerly Reading Rainbow, video featured above), and Charlotteans Yardwork and Blossoms.

The PotLucks (which actually start out with a pot luck dinner, so bring a dish if you're so inclined) are the work of Gaston County-based promoter and booking agent Philip Shive who was a partner in the resurrected Milestone Club and is still responsible for some of that venues' upcoming big shows (the Ataris Saturday, Cursive Tuesday, Kevin Seconds October 22, and Halloween's MXPX/Unwritten Law double bill). Shive lives in Belmont and the Mill shows allow him to bring in bands closer to the home. It's also a unique venue and live music keeps the Mill, which also features mini golf, more active during the year's less fright-friendly months.

Admission to Wednesday's Eternal Summers' show is $8. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. For an extra $5 you can play unlimited mini golf and check out the haunted attraction as well.

Each week for nearly a decade now I’ve sifted through localvenue calendars for our concert recommendations column. Obviously some weeks aren’t asbusy as others. This coming week the number of shows between September 28 andOctober 4 is absolutely ridiculous - way too much to fit into a hot concertscolumn.
Tuesday's variety is astounding. You have the loopy violin indie-folk shenanigans of Dr.Strings himself, Andrew Bird at Neighborhood, the metal supergroup Down atTremont, long running revered indie powerhouse Cursive at The Milestone (a bandthat would normally play a bigger venue on a lesser week), soul singer AllenStone who opened the Roots’ private DNC event earlier this month at Visulite, and former Headcoatee and (in my mind) underground UK legend HollyGolightly playing a free set during Snug Harbor’s Country Tuesday. And that’sonly Tuesday!
The rest of the week reflects that same rich variety usuallyblessed on bigger cities like New York or Atlanta. Friday I’ll be taking mytoddlers to see the Fresh Beat Band, but I could take in Matthews Mayfield andPerryman Jones at Evening Muse or the Afrobeat adventures of Daptone Records’(home to Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings) Antibalas at Visulite, or the early`00s hit makers the Ataris at The Milestone.
Saturday it’s three femalesinger-songwriters Garrison Starr (who I discovered opening for Steve Earleyears ago), Maia Sharp, and Adrianne Gonzalez at Evening Muse, songwriter Steve Forbert atStage Door Theater, music legend Leon Russell at Neighborhood, and NC’s 9th Wonderdeejaying classic hip-hop at Republic. To contact us Click HERE
The 23rd annual International Bluegrass Music Awards take place at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville Thursday and Cherryville's Darin and Brooke Aldridge Band (pictured above) are up for Emerging Artist of the Year. The emerging artist award is given to a new group on the bluegrass scene that's made particularly strong strides either commercially or artistically. The title has previously been awarded to Nickel Creek, the Infamous String Dusters, and current IBMA 2012 Entertainer of the Year nominees Dailey & Vincent and the Steep Canyon Rangers (who are nominated in that category along with band leader/actor Steve Martin).

The Aldridges conclude their busy 2012 touring schedule with a holiday concert at the Joy Performance Center in Kings Mountain on November 10.

The IBMA awards show will air live online simultaneously at www.bluegrassnation.org and www.bluegrasstoday.com Thursday at 8:30 p.m. EST. The awards ceremony is part of World of Bluegrass Week, which includes a business conference and fan fest. Darin and Brooke Aldridge performed for fans there earlier this week.

It isn't the only NC group up for an IBMA this year. Steep Canyon Rangers is up for its work with Martin, who they met in their hometown of Brevard, as well as for the SCR album "Nobodoy Knows You." "Nobody Knows You" is up for best graphic design for a recorded project. NC music legend Doc Watson, who died in May, is also up for guitarist of the year.

Kings of Leon tour cancelled

To contact us Click HERE

Kings of Leon have cancelled their tours in March to South Africa and Australia due to Nathan Folowill needing 'his bum wing to heal.' He also said, 'Sorry to all the South African and Australian fans, we will be back later on this year.'
Jared Folowill followed the previous tweet with: 'well, I now have March off. Any ideas for fun? I could always fly down to Australia and party anyway. i need some sun.' - guy why don't you just do your gig if you are going to come here and chill in the sun?? You just peeved 1000's of fans. Including me who was thrilled for your concert here in South Africa.
Dates have been set for November this year so we will just have to wait another 10 months for them.

The Greatest Jackson Five Album Covers

Last year one of my favorite artists, Amy Winehouse died of an apparent alcohol overdose. To most people it wasn't a surprise, because of the way she lived her life it was inevitable that she would be deceased soon if she didn't change her lifestyle. What perplexes me the most is the way the media and fans embrace tabloid rumors and drunken pictures of their favorite artists, while singing along to the beat of their songs.

People who grew up in the 60s, 70s and 80s know that fresh new musical talent got heard and promoted by the big record companies. As a result, amazingly wonderful music got heard by the masses. Today, things have changed. Most music that will be backed by the big record labels has to fit into a specific money making formula. Most of this music lacks deep musical beauty and complexity.

Does It Matter That You Cannot Sing?

To contact us Click HERE
Never, in the history of unsigned bands has a question been more hated and reviled than "Who do you sound like?" I get it. Musicians don't like to be compared to other musicians because originality is treasured by young musicians, but... you want to know how to market a band, and if you want to market your band well - hell, if you want to have any possible chance at the brass ring - you have to know who you sound like. It's just a plain, hard fact.
