Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar Talk Miscarriage On Today (Video)

In their first public appearance since news that the matriarch of the Duggar family had suffered a miscarriage last December, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar appeared on the Today Show this morning and spoke of their heartbreak. Michelle Duggar and her husband Jim Bob are doing the obligatory press rounds right now, as their reality TV show, “19 Kids and Counting” returns once again for a new season. The show will premiere tonight at 9:00 PM EST on TLC. It was on the Today Show last November that they first announced that Michelle was pregnant with their 20th child. Sadly, a month later, as Michelle and Jim Bob headed to a routine doctor’s visit to also find out the gender of their child, a heartbeat could not be found and they were told that Michelle had miscarried. TLC cameras were on hand at the doctor’s visit and captured the couple coming to terms with what they had just learned. It’s really very sad to watch. Jim Bob told Access Hollywood, “They were there filming us when he thought we were going to find out if we were having a boy or a girl.” With Michelle adding, “It was something that [...]

Iron Maiden opens tour with long awaited return

To contact us Click HERE

Influential theatrical metal veteran Iron Maiden kicked offits Maiden England World Tour at Charlotte’s Verizon Wireless AmphitheatreThursday. The opening night show marked the British band’s first Queen Cityconcert in nearly 25 years as frontman Bruce Dickinson (pictured above) noted following “2Minutes to Midnight” four songs into its set.
“Last time we were here it was1988. I’ve become a daddy three times since,” said the 53-year-old who added thatthe last Charlotte show was actually August 9, 1988. Dickinson said theaudience held a few thousand more people this time as Thursday’s crowd swelled around 14,000. The crowd response was that of fans that had been waitingover two decades (and in some cases their entire lives). The reaction to “TheTrooper,” which featured Dickinson wearing a red and white military jacket andwaving the Union Jack, was arguably unparalleled throughout the night. “Run Tothe Hills” had heads banging and bodies thrashing in nearly equal measure withthe band’s mascot Eddie in giant form twice the height of the band members bounding across the stage in Colonial military attire (above).
Though it wasn’t a song-for-song recap, the show closelymirrored 1988’s “Seventh Son of a Seventh Tour” (which was released on VHSunder the name “Maiden England”) down to the opening track “Moonchild” and the arcticstage that placed the members on a giant floating iceberg with drummer NickoMcBrain imbedded in the center of the glacier.
Following the hit "Can I Play with Madness," the crowd roared as footage of the cult `60s TV show “The Prisoner” flashed on screens to introduce the song of the same name, which the bandreportedly hasn’t performed live in decades.
Up to this point the sound was muddy with little definition, but it began to improve during “Afraid to Kill Strangers.” Friends on the lawnagreed. But opening night technical bugs are to be expected (yes Maiden hasbeen rehearsing here all week, but not cushioned by 14,000 bodies). FounderSteve Harris’ (pictured above) bass cut through everything. If you’re going to have bass licksrising to the top of the mix Harris’ are the ones you want. Miming most of thelyrics, Harris with his waist-length brown waves and tall frame stalked thestage emitting crisp, elastic notes.
The only other bug was with pyrotechnics that didn’ttrigger on the first try when Dickinson was “raising” flames during “Phantom ofthe Opera.” He just shrugged it off with a laugh.
Age hasn’t affected Dickinson who pounced and ran across thestage athletically, jumping through the air at one point. Vocally he remainsone of the strongest in metal. What was different from 1988 was his attire. Nowwith close cropped hair, he wore a sleeveless black t-shirt beneath a vest thatlooked like it was made of actual thick fishing rope (not fishnet) and brownpants laced up the sides.
Guitarist Adrian Smith astounded with his solo on “WastedYears.” Songs like it, “Phantom,” “The Clairvoyant” and “Fear of the Dark” withsignature twin guitars and changing tempos and dynamics reminded me what a hugeinfluence Iron Maiden has had on contemporary hardcore and metal bands thatregularly juxtapose intricate picking and theatrical classically-influencedpassages with wailing layered guitars and charging heaviness.
The theatrics included plenty of Eddie who hovered over theband in different forms - always a part of the changing backdrops in costumed stilt-walkerform during “Run to the Hills” (another obvious crowd favorite) and as a huge red-eyedBuddha-like statue resurrected from the original `88 tour that rose during “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.” A goat-headed god stoodto one side of the stage with its head hanging during “Number of the Beast” andan evil organist appeared during “Seventh Son,” but the creepiest prop awardgoes to the creature that was squirming in giant Eddie’s hand during the final song“Iron Maiden.”
Eddie wasn’t the only 12-foot tall figure on stage Thursday.Alice Cooper’s opening set included his own towering Frankenstein. While openersare often relegated to performing for a small portion of the crowd, Cooper (pictured on podium below) and hisfive-piece band performed during daylight for a packed house receiving the mostenthusiastic response for an opening act that I’ve witnessed since the BlackKeys played Verizon with Kings of Leon in 2010.
While not quite as long or theatrical as his 2010 co-headliningset with Rob Zombie, Cooper’s set was even better thanks to his timelesscharisma and the addition of guitarist Orianthi (well-known as part of MichaelJackson’s “This Is It” lineup). Despite the fake blood slashed across her lipsand neck (a reference to her role on the new song “Bite Your Head Off”),Orianthi appeared less road-worn with her bright blonde hair andsparkling leggings than the typical leather-clad rock guys that make up Cooper’sband. But she shredded like she’s been touring almost as long as her new boss. Her contribution was most notable on “Poison,” which was elevated by the highbacking vocals that appear on the original recording. Hits like it, “I’m Eighteen" (pictured below), “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “School’s Out” were equaled in energy by a couple oflesser known tracks.
Cooper didn’t shy away from theatrics either - spearing aphotographer (not a real one, mind you) with a microphone stand and gettingbeheaded with his infamous guillotine. He ended the set wearing a #18 Panthersjersey and a studded top hot that would dwarf Slash’s with “School’s Out,”during which the band briefly referenced Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in theWall Part 2.”
Charlotte was definitely treated on both counts although it’shard to compete with an opening night concert that Carolinians have waited overtwenty years for.
The “Maiden England Tour” hits Atlanta Saturday and BostonTuesday.

Con meets club culture at Chop Shop Saturday

In the past few years I’ve grown to enjoy pop cultureconventions. It wasn’t something that was even on my radar a decade ago, butsince my first in 2003 I’ve been to Wizard World Philadelphia, a “Buffy” con inKnoxville, and comic book and horror conventions.
It all started when actor James Marsters (who played Spike on“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”) made his first appearance atDragonCon in Atlanta. He’s become a regular guest at the Labor Day weekendconvention, which my husband and I have also set an annual marker for on ourcalendars. This year I’ll take my best friend from high school to her first Con. Last year I addedEliza Dushku to my collection of Buffy autographs. This year I’ll add RoseMcGowan’s sig to the “Death Proof” poster Rosario Dawson signed at HeroesCon afew years ago.
HeroesCon, which is taking place at The Charlotte ConventionCenter this weekend, has become another permanent “X” on our calendar and, unlikeDragonCon, it’s close and family friendly enough that we can bring our childrenalong.
There’s plenty of latenight adult entertainment for the comic book set during HeroesCon though, including a new offsite entry from NoDa’s ChopShop. The NoDa venue/bar celebrates HeroesCon’s 30th Anniversary withthe folks behind the White Trash theme parties. The Con-themed/geek culture concert and partyfeatures the rocking house band Iron Cordoba (no strangers to costumesthemselves) with hip-hop artists Aswell (of Mr. Invisible), Shadow, 10:Teal,and Wolly Vinyl as well as alien bellydance from Naima Sultana, freak showstunts from Ms. Collette and Billy ½, and makeup and airbrushing from the GetDead Crew. DJ Grandbastard will spin as well.
Prizes, food, games, and dance competitions are also on themenu. Cosplay is also encouraged. And a video game character dance-off is alsomentioned on the website if that helps you narrow your costume choices. Doorsopen at 8 p.m. and it’s free.

Review: Coldplay at Time Warner Cable Arena

To contact us Click HERE

Coldplaydid its fans a big favor by holding Tuesday’s concert indoors at Time WarnerCable Arena during the hottest week in recent memory. That decision wasprobably dictated more by the glow-in-the-dark nature of the production thanthe temperature.
Ticketholders were each given a fabric wrist band with a small hard plastic boxattached to it upon entry. When Coldplay hit the stage with the upbeat titletrack to its latest album “Mylo Xyloto” following sets by London-based rockband, Wolf Gang and Swedish dance pop star Robyn, those bracelets lit up thearena with over 17,000 tiny colored lights. It was one of many ways Coldplay pulledits audience into the festivities and made the crowd feel less like spectatorsand more a part of the show. Lasers danced through the air and circularscreens, including a large LED screen that hung over the stage, displayed dancinglights and stage footage.
Coldplaylooked like it just came from a paintball fight. By the number of glow-in-the-darkpaint blobs on their loose fitting pants and casual t-shirts, it looked like Martinlost and bassist Guy Berryman won.
WillChampion’s resounding beat signaled “Mylo’s” next track “Hurts Like Heaven.”Confetti burst from cannons as the song’s chorus kicked in.
Coldplay’suse of electronic touches on “Mylo Xyloto” has been both criticized and embraced, but other current influences were on display during those newer tracks as guitaristJonny Buckland’s intricate finger work echoed lesser known modern bands like instrumentalact Explosions in the Sky. “Heaven” ended with Martin in a backbend on the stage, already glistening with sweat. He thanked the crowd and promised the bestconcert of their lives. While that is a tall order, Coldplay proved again that it’sa phenomenal live band.
Themood escalated as it reached back to 2002’s “In My Place.” That song with itsfamiliar guitar intro was another example of Coldplay making beautiful oftensubdued albums that play well on radio, but in a live setting those songsbecome more dynamic and grander. “Major Minus,” “Lovers in Japan” and“The Scientist” followed as the group approached another peak with its earliesthit “Yellow.” Martin began the song quietly on his graffiti-covered piano tinklingagainst the hum of Buckland’s guitar. Martin switched to his acoustic as the anthemkicked in and yellow light cast over the crowd.
Theband gathered at the end of the catwalk for three songs including theRihanna-aided “Princess of China” (her vocals were piped in as she appeared onscreen). It was probably the most electronic feeling segment with Champion clickingtime on an electronic drum pad.
Thegroup was off to the finish beginning with the familiar strains of “Viva LaVida.” Champion pummeled kettle drums and thrashed a big Liberty-style bell. That gave way to the Cure-like guitar work of “Charlie Brown” and the anthemic “Paradise,”which closed the set with a giant sing along.
Theband appeared in the audience toward the back of the arena where it began itsencore with “Us Against the World” and a partly acoustic version of “Speed ofSound” before running back to the stage. There they ended with theone-two-three punch of “Clocks,” the moving fan favorite “Fix You” (probablyone of the most well written love songs in recent memory) and ended with thedanceable single “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.”
Whileglowing bracelets would’ve betrayed anyone attempting an early exit, few dared.Coldplay gave little reason to scoot out early. As with its 2009 concert atVerizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Coldplay embraced its audience and wouldn’t letit go.
“Thank you for the best job in the world,” Martin said before exiting the stagefollowing “Paradise.” It is easy to imagine that his is just that.

Asfor its reputation for booking stellar opening acts, Coldplay didn’t disappoint.Wolf Gang struggled through sound issues rarely seen on a tour of this size, but despite an unresponsive piano the quintet’s bouncy Euro rock and catchysingle “The King and All His Men” (currently in rotation on Sirius/XMalternative stations) served it well as an opener.
Withher daring fashion (she began her set in a ballooning silver skirt and “Thunderdome”-likevest), futuristic sound and original dance moves, Robyn can be a polarizingperformer. She turned in a set that at times felt more club than arena. The roboticvocals of minimalist tracks like “We Dance to the Beat” and “Fembot” (which areprobably the coldest songs on her fantastic electro-R&B 2010 dance album “BodyTalk”) may have seemed an unusual introduction to those who weren’t familiarwith her. She did deliver more popular singles such as 2005’s “Cobrastyle,” andthe more current “Dancing on My Own,” “Indestructible” and “Girlfriend” whichhad girls in our row copping her dance moves and singing the lyrics long aftershe’d left the stage.

The song has burrowed its way into my brain and the video is clever and different. Lindsay's next Charlotte concert is July 28 at Visulite

Review: Sinners & Saints "Stupid Little Songs"

To contact us Click HERE

There’s something about Charlotte singer-songwriter PerryFowler that makes you want to root for him. Maybe it’s the natural charm hecarries with him no matter if he’s waiting tables, in the audienceenthusiastically watching his Charlotte music peers, or on stage both solo andwith  Sinners & Saints (his band with Mark Baran). His demeanor is genial, never forced. The“Stupid Little Songs” on the new five track Sinners & Saints EP are nodifferent. The group delivers countrified tales of love with twangy harmoniesand rootsy instrumentation - harmonica, fiddle, etc. Those instruments blendwell, but are still allowed room to breathe on songs like “Million Dollars”where you can hear strings plucked, a fiddle weeping, and the calculated strumof the guitar. It’s the kind of song you can imagine quieting a crowd at TheThirsty Beaver on a Sunday afternoon.
“Stupid Little Songs” is deeply Southern, but contemporary. Fowler’s phrasing on “I Don’t Want to Work” for instance remindsme of critically acclaimed Americana darling Jessica Lea Mayfield (who is fromOhio, so not exactly Southern), but delivered briskly. The song then whisksinto a lovely harmonized refrain of “I don’t want to go to work/All I want todo is stay in bed with you” - a simple sentiment that succinctly captures thatfeeling of falling in love at the beginning of a relationship, talking into thewee hours, wanting to spend every minute together and making yourselves latefor work. Anyone that’s fallen in love in that manner should relate to it.
That outlook carries into the next track “Have It All,”which is equally catching. The sentiment - “Seems like we’re all eithersearching for something or someone/Sometimes we settle for anything or anyone/What’ssay we take the fall...we had those feeling whenever we was young andunafraid to have it all” - is more mature and reflective, as if looking back ona time when the romantic risks of the opening track were the norm. It could actuallybe interpreted as a critique on relationships, getting older, or even the way someconsumers accept whatever’s easiest (mainstream radio, reality TV) and closestto access as they get older instead of seeking out quality in entertainment. That may be reading too much into it, but I like it when a song works onseveral different levels and allows the listener to come to a conclusion - and morethan one at that.
“I’m No Good” is more of a downhome boot stomper andprobably a bit less resonant than some of the more emotionally-anchored tracks. But as a faster, upbeat track it could be one of the strongest live.
The harmonies and instrumentation recall early AvettBrothers. “Stupid Little Songs” is marked by the same raw, rugged feel andharmonies that blend well without the singers’ voices all mashing together. Youcan hear the highs, the lows, and the in-betweens. Those qualities are most notableon the final track “The Odds."  Itsmatter-of-fact delivery of lines like “Don’t forget where you came from…we mustall overcome” also remind me of those Avetts’ lines that inspire massive crowds to sing along often loudly overtaking the band.

Grammy winning trio the Carolina Chocolate Drops return to their home state Wednesday for a performance at The Mint Museum Uptown as part of the opening reception for "Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial." Dial - a renowned African-American artist from Alabama who is now in his eighties - will also be on hand as the museum's special guest of honor. The string band's music is a fitting companion for Dial's work because both draw on similar eras of Southern African-American traditions.

Tickets for the reception and concert range from $50 for members to $75 for non-members. The reception begins at 6 p.m. The Mint Museum Uptown is part of Levine Center for the Arts on S. Tryon St. You can find tickets here.

Review: Bubonik Funk "Zabooki"

Bubonik Funk’s third release “Zabooki” begins with a typicalblues lick, but the direction and scope grows from there. When the fourthtrack “Mung Beans” bursts from the speakers with vocalist Dylan Ellettdeclaring “Life isn’t fair!” like the extroverted offspring of Anthony Keidisand David Lee Roth, the group really hits its stride. Ellett approaches thehalf rapped vocals like a blues singer while guitarist Stefan Kallandarprovides playful notes that are just as engaging as the lyrics about origamibirds and a cane-playing bum that fancies himself a member of ZZ Top. Itescalates into a fun guitar workout even adding some bouncy, subtle horns tothe track's close.
Since the Charlotte jam-funk quartet’s first EP, “OTB,” in2008 the band’s arrangements and vocals have become more refined. Ellett’s low raspyvocals and interplay with Kallandar is more seamless. The directionisn’t always obvious. Take “Organized Crime.” It swells into a soulful funkwith a nice layer of backing vocals, while “Mystic Feeney” grows from ahypnotic intro that’s fairly serious and sympathetic to its subject into a wildblues-funk romp about mental instability and hallucination. The dynamics driveit back and forth between those two extremes. That approach works well considering its subject matter.
“Baby Equipment,” which closes the album, is another highlight. With its synthed-up bop-bop-bop-bop verses it’s easy to imagine it on classicrock radio (although it varies between `70s and `80s in feel). But it wouldalso fit on modern rock radio today. And while guitar solos can often soundstuck-on last minute and extravagant (more for the player than the song), “Baby Equipment” includesone of the most fitting solos in recent memory. It begins with an irresistiblyclassic feel then swerves into a psychedelic funk frenzy of wah wah anddistortion aided noodling.
As usual the lyrics are quirky and interesting. I can’t tellif the vocals are a more prominent part of the mix on this record, but thelyrics certainly draw listeners in. Some are direct such as “This’llBe the Day” - a hopeful tale of romantic chase - and “Mystic Feeney,” whichriffs on mental illness. Others, like “Organized Crime,” are moremysterious (“My trophy wife bites”, huh?).

The songs sound less improvisational and more intentional, possibly because some of them were written through email exchanges while itsmembers were off at college. Bubonik Funk didn't seem absent from theCharlotte music scene because it’s gigged fairly regularly, but in actualitytonight’s show at Evening Muse marks its first in four years as a trulyCharlotte-based band. In that time Kallander has studied music at Berklee inBoston while Ellett (who also plays keys) was at Eastern Carolina Universitystudying film. Meanwhile the rhythm section of Daniel Allison (drums) and NickMcOwen (bass) remained in town.

The band celebrates the release of “Zabooki” tonight, June29, at Evening Muse at 10:30 p.m. with Vagabond Swing. Admission is $5 to $7.704-376-3737; www.eveningmuse.com

For many of the Romantic era composers, the writing of symphonies presented problems, especially with the use of sonata form. The great symphonic composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and even Bruckner used themes when they used sonata form while the Romantics used melodies. What created the problem was the differences between a theme and a melody.

Fans of the standards haven't had much to look forward to in recent years, and this is especially true if they've been venturing out to Las Vegas in hopes of catching a classic crooner delivering a legitimate concert without the over-the-top bells and whistles. The truth: contemporary music is going the way of the dodo, but Barry might save the day. Barry Manilow is the top-selling contemporary artist of all time, with over 80 million albums sold to date.
