Album review: The Cribs - In The Belly of the Brazen Bull

To contact us Click HERE
In The Belly of The Brazen Bull gives fans of The Cribs pretty much anything they could ever want from the band, filtered through the 90s buzz lens of producers Steve Albini and Dave Fridmann.

The fifth record from the Yorkshire trio (former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr left the band in April 2011) runs the gamut. The first half cranks through short bursts of solid pop laced with aggressive guitar and drums. Here listeners are treated to the radio-ready sing-a-long anthem “Come On, Be a No One” and “Anna,” a romantic rocker with some great drum fills in the chorus.

In the middle of the album, The Cribs try out some new things. The Albini-produced “Chi-Town” is as close to punk as they’ll get with adequate results. “Back to the Bolthole” is a sludge fest with a creeping tempo and gritty synths that segues into the album’s quietest track, “I Should Have Helped.”

In The Belly of the Brazen Bull ends with a 4-track suite. Last in the set is the descriptively-titled “Arena Rock Encore With Full Cast.”

“Sorry that it’s taken years,” the band sings together, “We were victims of our own ideals.” The monster chorus makes the sarcasm juicier, though even as The Cribs are making fun of arena rock, they’ve managed to write a pretty catchy arena rock song.

What keeps In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull from being a great record is that it’s variety can feel calculated and it makes one wonder: Is this the music The Cribs wanted to write or the music they thought everyone else wanted them to write?

The Cribs will play Motorco on June 8. Tickets are $15 in advance.

Kings of Leon's 2nd place winners, 'Road to Slane Castle' forgotten

To contact us Click HERE

Well it looks like we will never get our prize from  Kings of Leon , MTV , Superglued , or  Poptolife (the marketing and promotion people who handled the prize distribution)!

We are the winners of a contest called Road to Slane Castle a contest with the top prize being an all expense paid trip to Ireland to see Kings of Leon play live and a 2nd place prize being a tour pass to all 30 KOL shows here in the U.S., along with other prizes of band equipment!

After several emails to my contact with poptolife, they just tell me that they are waiting for Kings of Leon to ad another U.S. tour! I am sorry, but these people could have done something for all that we lost due to the tour being cancelled!

We are a working poor couple, who save very hard for the one thing we both enjoy and that is seeing Kings of Leon in concert!  We realize that they cannot make Kings of Leon ad another tour until the boys are ready but they could at least help us with the cost of all our hotels and other money we spent in anticipation the tour pass!  We pre-paid for 14  hotel rooms (which means no refund) only because we were able to get Candlewood Suites  to give us a $30 dollar a night break on each stay!

We didn't want to let something as special as this go to waste! We even asked if we could give all but 2 of the  shows away but we were told we couldn't give the tour pass to anyone!  We didn't want  the other people in the contest, to think we just wasted a great gift by not going to as many shows as possible! Of course, we also wanted to see as many shows as we could afford!  We cut every corner we could to save for these shows only to end up losing our entire savings!

I know that two thousand dollars might not be a huge savings to some people (like the boys from KOL seeing as how they actually spent that much on one bottle of wine) but this was everything to us!

All of this doesn't even take into consideration the money we lost taking off of work! We tried to get put back on the schedule but were not able to so we each lost two paychecks and if it weren't for us having vacation time it would have been three weeks!

Things like this do not come every day for people like most of us so when it does I think anyone would have done as we did! This was the most excited we had been in a long time! We don't go out to eat or out to the movies as a lot of people do because we simply cannot afford to, so when you lose money that took you 5 years to save it really is a very hard blow! I think we have both been very nice to our contact with poptolife so you would think they would try and do something to help us out!

I am starting to feel like they are taking advantage of us! Maybe I am wrong but if it were either one of us (in our contacts shoes)  then I know we would be talking to MTV or Kings of Leon to see what kind of help we could provide for a couple of fans, who have lost everything because of them cancelling their tour!

Maybe I am just upset at the moment but I think anyone would be if they were in our shoes! What do you think? Would you do all you could to help out a couple, if you were in their shoes?

Kyuss Lives! respond to lawsuit in "Rolling Stone"

To contact us Click HERE
Last September I interviewed vocalist John Garcia about the Kyuss Lives! reunion prior to the band playing Asheville two days after my husband's birthday (super present, super show). The band featured original members Garcia and drummer Brant Bjork along with sometime bassist Nick Oliveri and new guitarist Bruno Fevery. Longtime Kyuss fans like my husband, his bandmates, and their friends were beside themselves heaping on the superlatives after the show which many dubbed concert of the year (although my husband still sticks with Sade as his top pick).

In the interview Garcia seemed ecstatic about the reception and the reunion. You could see that on stage. He talked about the group working on new material, supporting Oliveri through his legal problems, and the amicable situation with fellow founding guitarist Josh Homme who surpassed his Kyuss fame as leader of Queens of the Stone Age.

Then in March, Homme and another former Kyuss bassist, Scott Reeder, filed a lawsuit against Garcia and Bjork (Oliveri eventually dropped out of the band) alleging "trademark infringement and consumer fraud." In a press release they stated that Kyuss Lives! had "filed federal documents in 2011 in an attempt to steal the name Kyuss."

Aside from a statement in March saying they were "shocked and saddened" by the suit, Garcia and Bjork have remained pretty quiet until yesterday when "Rolling Stone" published an interview with both band members. You can read it here.

As a music fan I try not to let band drama get in the way of enjoying music. I saw Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss Lives! at the same venue in Asheville last year. Both were great. No matter which side you come down on the interview and some of the reader comments are pretty interesting.

Local acts fill out Speed Street schedule

To contact us Click HERE
In addition to the already announced headliners and NASCAR drivers scheduled for this year's Food Lion Speed Street festival, the annual free three-day fest features a number of local and regional acts playing originals and covers. The annual 600 Speed Week festival takes place uptown Thursday, Friday and Saturday May 24-26.

Live music kicks off Thursday with U-Neek Flavor, Sol Fusion, Darrell Harwood, and Benton Blount. Thursday's previously announced headliners include Evelyn "Champagne" King, Midnight Star, and Easton Corbin.

Friday's lineup includes the Hoss Howard Band opening for Justin Moore and Sugar Glyder and 21st Century Goliath opening up for Halestorm. If you like catchy, big atmospheric pop-rock or AC/DC style rock I'd recommend both latter locals. I haven't seen Culowhee's Hoss Howard live, but the music on his website indicates his warm vocals and Southern sound make him a perfect pick to warm up a country loving crowd.

Saturday music begins at noon on the Coca-Cola Stage with Fusebox Poet (above, who make rock that could easily find its way on 106.5 The End) followed by Stella Rising, The Catch Fire, and Chris Weaver Band. Night Ranger and Loverboy close out the Coca-Cola Stage.

Sun Dried Vibes, Vess, Beyond the Fade, Stony Creek Boys, and Gal Friday perform on the Miller Lite Stage. Casey James and Clay Walker headline that stage as well.

For the entire schedule go to http://www.600festival.com/event_schedule.aspx.

Review: Jane's Addiction at Ovens Auditorium

To contact us Click HERE

The Christmas my parents got divorced my dad bought me Jane’sAddiction’s “Nothing’s Shocking” (much to the amusement of the kid that sold itto my 300 pound bib overall-sporting father). I remember laying in the dark onthe living room carpet listening to “Up the Beach” and “Ocean Size” and “Ted…JustAdmit It.” It was weird and fascinating. In a way, it changed my path. I betmany of the concertgoers at Wednesday’s Jane’s Addiction show at Ovens Auditoriumhave similar stories.
And while I’ll never recapture the magic and romanticism ofseeing Jane’s live for the first time during the “Ritual de lo Habitual” tour,I never expected them to be so good 21 years (to the month) later. Aided bystylized production, which included Perry Farrell’s wife Etty Lau as one of twoscantily clad S&M dancers, Jane’s put on an incredible show that was farbeyond the performance it gave a few years ago opening for Nine Inch Nails atVerizon Wireless Amphitheatre (although that one did boast original bassistEric Avery, which was a treat).
Wednesday’s show was more like one of Farrell’s twisted (hisword) fantasies come to life. Whereas in 2009 Farrell seemed to show his age more,he, ever buff guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist ChrisChaney all appeared fresh from the gym. Farrell in particular reveled in thespotlight grinning that wide Cheshire cat smile and repeatedly calling us “SouthCarolina” (which did garner some boos) until the very end of the show.
Britain’s the Duke Spirit opened the show with its sultry, bluesy modern rock. Singer Leila Moss is a show unto herself. In skintightleggings, a lacy poncho-style blouse, and braids framing her petite face shelooked like a cross between a “Game of Thrones” character and CBGBs era DeborahHarry. Like Harry she’s got a sexy, capable and unique voice that purrs overthe gnarling guitars as she shakes her tambourine, or at one point, played a killerharmonica solo. The Duke Spirit has opened for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, TedLeo, and Incubus in Charlotte. I long to see it receive a greater receptionstateside.
The audience stepped into Jane’s Addiction’s crazy, colorfulworld as the band took the stage with “Underground,” which opens its newestalbum “The Great Escape Artist.” The dancers swung above the band withparachute-like skirts that draped almost to the stage while a man dressed as anevil bird “flew” and pawed suspended on one side of the stage. The crowderupted as Jane’s kicked into “Mountain Song” with Navarro turning in one ofmany spot-on guitar solos.  The dancersleft the stage giving way to retro footage that busily played on backdropscentered around the nude twin statues that serve as the tour mascots ont-shirts and posters.
“Just Because,” “Been Caught Stealing,” and “Ain’t No Right”followed. Then the two Asian girls returned wearing bondage gear and negligees and nestled on a rocking wooden seatthat reminded me of a porch glider for asort of disturbing showstopper - “Ted…Just Admit It.” They “unwrapped” eachother using their binding as a prop while vintage pinup and bondage footagerolled on the screens to illustrate the lyrics (“sex is violent”). Althoughsome of the footage featured women on women violence, it annoyed me that allthe violence was perpetuated against women.
Written 25 years ago lyrics like “the news is just anothershow” are even more relevant today.
As if to disprove the “nothing’s shocking” refrainof “Ted,” the hauntingly catchy “Twisted Tales” was accompanied by a babydollbashing performance art piece and clips from a 1988 documentary about dollabusing teen punks or, as the film is titled, “Sadobabies: Runaways in SanFrancisco.”
One fan climbed on stage during the stage front acoustic jamof “Classic Girl” and “Jane Says” (with Perkins playing steel drums on thelatter). Farrell invited the fan to stay, but Navarro, who was incrediblypatient, eventually had her escorted off the stage after she insisted on whisperingin his ear while he was trying to play.
It was refreshing to see Navarro, so adept on guitar, focuson drumming alongside Perkins and Chaney during a tribal rendition of “ChipAway.”
The set really hit its stride with the instrumental “Up theBeach” leading into the atmospheric, reverb drenched “Irresistible Force” and “OceanSize," which closed the set. The cast regrouped for an encore of the marathon “ThreeDays” and the powerfully spastic “Stop!” As the music dropped out at the latter’sclimax the entire crowd seemed to join in with Farrell. The band appeared trulythankful and humble sticking around to shake hands and sign a few autographsafter those last lingering notes disappeared. Farrell even handed a set list toone adoring fan - something you rarely see the actual artist do.

Album Review: Red Collar - Welcome Home

To contact us Click HERE
Three years after their debut, Pilgrim, Red Collar is back with Welcome Home, a focused effort full of smart songwriting and larger-than-life moments.

This time around around, lead singer Jason Kutchma is exposed front and center. He sounds extremely confident here and his grizzled voice takes over the record often. Welcome Home begins with him shouting at a boy to stand up straight in "Orphanage" and Kutchma is so commanding, the listener will find their own spine stiffening.

Kutchma’s powerful vocals are balanced with an equally powerful dual-guitar attack. Combined, they’re big and bold without being brash, but the crystal clear production makes possible to go back and forth between speakers and here each individual line. It’s really cool to hear when both lines merge into one to send a song into the stratosphere.

There’s a lot of intelligence in Red Collar’s compositions. The band uses transitions incredibly well on Welcome Home. "Fade Into The Night" jump to half speed and gradual acceleration back up to speed gives the song a more dynamic effect.

The real gem here is "This House." It starts out as a sparse ballad with emotional vocals and grows so huge that Kutchma has to shout at the top of his lungs to compete with the towering guitars and explosive drumming. Even at its loudest, the listener can still hear how all the parts connect.

It’s this ability to make epic moments sound nuanced and thoughtful that makes Red Collar more than your average bar band and Welcome Home better than your average rock album.

Welcome Home is out now on Tiny Engines. Red Collar will play Death To False Hope Fest at Motorco Music Hall on June 29.

What Are the Advantages of A Guitar Pickguard?

To contact us Click HERE
Your guitar should reflect your personality and the style of music you play. However, it may be hard to find a guitar that reflects who you are without searching. If you already have a guitar, you may want to change the look of the guitar in some way. Altering the guitar physically is hard and if done improperly can often lead to a ruined sound from the guitar and can even make it more difficult to play.

Judge Commends Lindsay Lohan For Doing Well With Her Community Service

We're gonna admit something: we're very surprised. So many years spent wasting her second chances, we didn't expect much from her this time around. We were pretty convinced she couldn't turn things around.
We're glad to be proven wrong.
This morning, Lindsay Lohan was in court to appear in front of her probation judge, Judge Stephanie Sautner, [...]

If you don't have a date for Valentine's Day and you plan on staying home and feeling sorry for yourself, you're in luck! You can spend the evening with Courteney Cox!

After many, many, MANY months of logisitcs, it turns out that Court and her Cougar Town crew are heading back to the alphabet network. Since Work It didn't exactly work out, the bosses at ABC have replaced it's spot with the popular sitcom, which will return Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 8:30 p.m.

Oh! So that's why nothing was said about it returning during midseason announcements. Can't really talk about one show replacing another until the first one actually flops. Gotcha!

We're happy for Courteney, but do you know who we are more excited for? Busy Phillips! Can we just talk about how she makes that show and how seeing her at all the awards shows with Michelle Williams has just made us miss her all the more!

The Yamaha DGX-640 digital piano is claimed by Yamaha to be "Yamaha's most piano-like portable grand piano ever". This is a pretty big claim, especially coming from a company like Yamaha. Yamaha commenced operations in Japan back in 1887 making reed organs, (then known as Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd). Since then, Yamaha has become the world's largest full line manufacturer of musical instruments. Let's see why they they would make such a claim.

Aural skills may be the most important that a guitarist can have, yet this basic ability to train and use one's ears is often overlooked. A guitarist who possesses a well-trained ear has an advantage over one who does not: the ability to name any musical note or chord by ear. To play music, you must listen to music- hear the music.

Household Charge

To contact us Click HERE
Details of the new household charge, which will be €100, have been announced.

It is expected a number of low-income households will be given a waiver from the charge.

Both the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Environment Minister Phil Hogan had promised clarity on any household charge before the summer recess.

The service charge is to be a combined water and property tax and will be set in the region of €100 a year, until schemes for charging for water and a property tax are introduced.

The EU/IMF bailout dictates that an interim charge must be put in place for water, beginning next year.

Speed Street solidifies lineup

The 18th Annual Food Lion Speed Street Festival, which kicks off Thursday May 24, revealed its full lineup of headlining artists earlier this week. As previously announced R&B artist Evelyn "Champagne" King and `80s funk/R&B unit Midnight Star will perform on the Coca-Cola Stage while Easton Corbin rouses country fans on the Miller Lite Stage Thursday, May 24.

Justin Moore and Halestorm (pictured) headline those respective stages Friday night, May 25. Pennsylvania female fronted hard rock band, Halestorm, recently received stellar reviews for it's performance at the Carolina Rebellion festival in Rockingham last weekend.

Saturday Loverboy and Night Ranger bring `80s rock nostalgia to closing night of the festival. They play the Coca-Cola Stage. "American Idol" Season Nine's third place finalist Casey James will open for returning Speed Street entertainer Clay Walker on the Miller Lite Stage Saturday as well.

In 2011 an estimated 400,000 made their way to uptown Charlotte for the free race week festival. Activities are planned throughout the day and include NASCAR driver meet and greets, giveaways, and live music and entertainment from regional and national artists. The entire schedule and entertainment lineup should be available the week of the festival at http://www.600festival.com/flss.aspx.

Food Lion Speed Street takes place in uptown Charlotte along Tryon St. and Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, between the Bank of America Corporate Center and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Gates open at noon and close at 11 p.m.

Inflation

To contact us Click HERE
irishtimes.com

Prices continued to rise compared to last year, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) said today, but fell back marginally month on month.

The annual inflation rate measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 0.5 per cent in the year to September, the largest increase since December 2008, and higher than the 0.2 per cent rise recorded a month earlier.

However, on a monthly basis, prices were down slightly, dropping 0.1 per cent compared to August.

The monthly price drop was driven by a decline in the cost of transport, which fell 1.6 per cent as airfares became cheaper. Miscellaneous goods and services fell by 0.4 per cent as charges for medical insurance declined.

However, it masked a number of price rises throughout the economy. The cost of clothing and footwear rose by 4.5 per cent during the month, mainly due to a recovery in prices following the summer sales.

"Further analysis reveals that there is little in the way of inflation pressures outside of mortgage interest costs and education," said Goodbody economist Dermot O'Leary.

Over the year, the cost of education was 9.5 per cent higher, while housing, water, electricity, gas and Other fuels saw a 8.5 per cent hike in prices. Communications was also more expensive, with prices rising 2.9 per cent.

Shoes and clothes fell by 7.4 per cent, while furnishings, household equipment maintenance saw prices decline by 3.7 per cent.

The cost of alcoholic beverages and tobacco was down 3.1 per cent over the year.

Fine Gael's enterprise, jobs and economic planning spokesman Richard Bruton said there is no sign of a return of confidence to the economy or in consumer spending. He noted that prices fell mainly in domestic services.

“The upward pressure on prices is due entirely to rises in a small number of areas. Mortgage interest, insurance, telecommunications, and third level education are all bucking the trend of falling prices.

“These sectors are all closely regulated by the Government. And it’s going to get worse: the Government will soon be inflicting a price increase in electricity on consumers and businesses."

However, he said that Ireland was regaining its competitive edge.

"Excluding mortgages, Irish prices are still falling, and have been for 18 months," he said.

"However, as ordinary people make sacrifices, and cut their wages and charges, the Government must see to it that its own activities also contribute."

The EU Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which excludes certain items such as mortgage interest and car tax from the calculations, fell by 0.2 per cent in the month, and 1 per cent compared with September 2009.

IBec said it was likely to be 2013 before the Irish price level returns to where it was in summer 2008.

"Ireland must continue to use this window of opportunity to restore competitiveness ," economist Fergal O'Brien said.

The business group said said the inflation figures indicated that price pressures would remain modest for some time yet.

"Although the consumer price index shows that Ireland has now exited the period of deflation, there is little or no price pressure in the economy and only very modest inflation will be experienced over the coming years," said Mr O'Brien.

"Following the end of the summer sales in clothing and footwear, we would have expected to see average prices rise marginally in September. However, the CPI was actually lower than in August as falling food, restaurant and other prices more than offset the seasonal bounce back in clothing and footwear prices."

However, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association remained concerned about the effects of some costs on businesses, and renewed its call to the Government to tackle State-controlled costs.

“The Government policy of a smart economy, based on export driven growth, is nonsense, once they continue to allow state influenced cost increases to undermine competitiveness," said chief executive Mark Fielding. "Companies are attempting to reduce their costs on an ongoing basis to compete, but are hampered time and again by cost increases introduced by the State."

This call was echoed by the Small Firms Association.

“Irish small businesses have taken harsh steps to regain cost-competitiveness, but any gains are negated by the costs imposed by the government administered sector,” said director Avine McNally. “Government are ignoring a key priority by not urgently tackling the issue of costs. If action is not taken further jobs will be lost and businesses will close.”

Hundreds of campaigners are expected to stage a protest today against cuts at Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan.

Hundreds of campaigners are expected to stage a protest against hospital cuts today.

The Save Navan Hospital Campaign has called on the residents of Trim to create an enormous letter ‘H’ in the grounds of Trim Castle.

Peadar Toibin, campaign chairman, said the stunt would reveal the need for a properly functioning hospital in the country.

“We want to highlight the centrality of Our Lady’s Hospital Navan in the welfare of all the people of Meath,” said Mr Tobin, deputy mayor of Navan.

“We oppose strongly these dangerous and haphazard cuts that the HSE and this government are inflicting.

“Tens of thousands of people from the Trim area use Navan Hospital and we will give these people a chance to voice their opposition.”

He added that a mass rally would be held in Navan on October 30th.

Google Bags Billions -

GOOGLE CUT its taxes by $3.1 billion (€2.2 billion) in the last three years by using a strategy known as the “Double Irish”, under which it shuttled foreign profits through its Irish operation to Bermuda.

Google’s “income shifting” helped reduce its overseas tax rate to 2.4 per cent, the lowest of the top five US technology companies, according to regulatory filings in six countries.

Google’s tax reduction method takes advantage of Irish tax law to legally move profits in and out of subsidiaries here, eventually lodging them in island havens that levy no corporate income taxes.

Companies that use the “Double Irish” arrangement – so named because it relies on two Irish companies – avoid taxes at home and abroad.

Facebook is preparing a similar structure that will send earnings from Ireland to the Cayman Islands, according to its filings in the Caymans and Ireland.

The strategy yesterday attracted criticism in the US, which is struggling to close a projected $1.4 trillion budget gap. The US has a corporate tax rate of 35 per cent.

The tactics of Google, which employs almost 2,000 people in Dublin, and Facebook depend on “transfer pricing” – paper transactions among a company’s subsidiaries that allow for the allocation of income to tax havens while attributing expenses to higher-tax countries.

International income shifting helped cut Google’s overall effective tax rate to 22.2 per cent last year. The company also shifted income through the Netherlands, in a technique known as the “Dutch Sandwich” because it sees the country acting as a stopover between two other jurisdictions.

“It’s remarkable that Google’s effective rate is that low,” said Martin Sullivan, a tax economist who formerly worked for the US treasury department.

A spokesman for the Department of Finance declined to comment specifically on Google’s strategies.

“Ireland always seeks to ensure that the profits charged in Ireland fully reflect the functions, assets and risks located here by multinational groups,” he said.

A Google spokeswoman said that the firm’s practices were “very similar to those at countless other global companies” operating across a wide range of industries.

Google’s Irish business provides technical, sales and operations support to customers in more than 50 countries. Last year, the Dublin-based company posted profits of €47.5 million, up almost fivefold on the previous 12 months.

Google paid taxes of € 18.3 million in Ireland last year, up from €8.1 million in 2008.

Kings of Leon Tour USA Cancelled

To contact us Click HERE
Kings of Leon have cancelled their US tour after singer Caleb Followill was hit by vocal problems and exhaustion.

The cancellation comes three days after Followill left the stage mid-show in Dallas, Texas, due to what he called “excessive” and “unbearable” heat.

But other members of the family band said over the weekend that its problems went beyond dehydration, something that was not addressed in a statement yesterday.

“Thanks to all our true fans for understanding and helping us through this hard time,” Followill said on Twitter.

His exit led to vows to replay the show by his brothers, drummer Nathan and bassist Jared, and cousin guitarist Matthew, on Twitter.

But Jared Followill also acknowledged the band had “internal sicknesses & problems” that go beyond dehydration.

A statement says the band are “devastated, but in order to give their fans the shows they deserve, they need to take this break”.

They will return to the road in Vancouver, Canada on September 28th. The cancelled shows will not be rescheduled.

After years of buzz, the Nashville, Tennessee, band named after the brothers’ father stormed the international scene with the singles Sex On Fire and Use Somebody from their breakthrough album, the multi-platinum Only By The Night, in 2008. They released their fifth album, Come Around Sundown, earlier this year and headlined Slane.

They have been bankable touring stars, though not without a few notable problems. They had to postpone some dates earlier this year when Nathan Followill injured an arm while working out.

The band also walked off stage in St Louis last year because of pigeon droppings falling from the rafters, but returned a few months later to make it up to fans.

Caleb Followill told the crowd repeatedly last Friday that he was too hot and that his voice was suffering for it. At one point he said he was ill and would be back after taking a few minutes to recover, but he never returned.

The Followills, known for their sense of humour and willingness to circle the wagons when criticised, took to Twitter to apologise. Matthew Followill even went so far as to apologise to individual followers.

Jared Followill tweeted yesterday that he was “utterly depressed” and that “family has to come 1st”. But then he tried to lighten the mood.

“Don’t jump to conclusions guys,” he wrote in a subsequent tweet. “We’re not breaking up. BRB. Just got a text from Nathan..... Ummm.... Eesh. So about what I just said....... ”

Then he posted: “Kidding! Kidding! Not breaking up.”

Rise n' shine, it's Record Store Day Saturday

To contact us Click HERE
Saturday morning my family and I will be getting up earlier than usual. It's the third annual Record Store Day, which means tons of exclusive limited edition releases. Here Lunchbox Records will be carrying many, many of these releases. Record Store Day's official website also lists The Record Cellar in Rock Hill, The Birdsnest in Davidson, and Armada Music in Statesville as also participating.

Record stores were a big part of my life at one time. I worked at Charlotte's Record Exchange during the mid to late `90s and I made some of my best friends in Charlotte there.

One of the founders of Record Store Day was my first editor - Carrie Colliton, who at one time edited The Record Exchange's "Music Monitor." She got me my first interviews (Frente, Letters to Cleo, and Kristin Hersh) and let me review acts as obscure as Winston-Salem's Squatweiler, actress Kerri Kenney's ("The State," "Reno 911!") band Cakelike, and one of my all-time favorites Sleater-Kinney (who did eventually get popular). That record store changed my life in a lot of ways.

While we were fighting the big box Media Plays and Best Buys at that time, independent record stores today are simply fighting for survival given the popularity of digital downloading. Luckily vinyl is back, which gives those stores another niche to fill.

It's been exciting to see how many artists have jumped on board in support of Record Store Day in the last three years. Everyone from Jimmy Fallon (who is putting out a "Tebowie" 7" single) to big name artists like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and Katy Perry have official RSD vinyl releases.

Many releases feature unusual covers including the Carolina Chocolate Drops doing Run DMC's "You Be Illin'" on Coke bottle green vinyl, the Civil Wars covering Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (check it out on YouTube), Feist and Mastodon covering each other (Mastodon also does a Flaming Lips song on another release), and Amanda Palmer taking on Nirvana's "Polly" (which was originally released on a "Spin Magazine" compilation) and Radiohead's "Idioteque."

There are lots of live releases from artists like Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, the Grateful Dead, and Taking Back Sunday (to name but a few). "Rockabye Baby" - the series that turns songs by the Pixies, the Beatles, Metallica, and Queens of the Stone Age into baby-friendly instrumental versions - is releasing its Smiths' lullaby album on vinyl. There are several older albums getting the vinyl treatment. The "Pretty In Pink," "The Breakfast Club" and "Empire Records" soundtracks are being reissued on vinyl, which sounds pretty irresistible if you want to fire up some `80s and `90s nostalgia on the turntable.

The list of releases is ridiculously vast. There's an official list here and Lunchbox Records has compiled a comprehensive list of both official and non-official releases that will (cross your fingers) be in stock at least when doors open at 9 a.m. Keep in mind that some of these are very limited though.

Everything at Lunchbox Records, aside from exclusive RSD releases, will be 15 percent off as well.

I'll be on the look out for School of Seven Bells' 7" cover of Siouxsie & the Banshees' "Kiss Them For Me," although it's not on Lunchbox's list. I may have to settle for that download next week.
